POLITICSSep 2025 years of 'War on Terror' has mainly weakened the US on the world stagePrecies 25 jaar geleden verklaarde de Amerikaanse president George W. Bush de 'War on Terror', als reactie op de aanslagen van 9/11 waarbij duizenden Amerikanen de dood vonden. "Of je staat achter ons, of je staat achter de terroristen", zei hij in een speech voor het Amerikaanse Congres. "Amerika ging een existentiële kruistocht voeren", zegt hoogleraar buitenlands beleid aan de universiteit van Maastricht, Roberta Haar. De War on Terror moest vrijheid, democratie en de rechtsstaat beschermen. Officieel is die strijd voorbij, maar resultaat boekte de VS nauwelijks. De oorlogen pakten eerder aNOS Buitenland

WORLDSep 20Reporter’s note: two Delhis, one weekend – when the world came to dinnerI grew up in Delhi. Not Lutyens’ Delhi, that quieter, greener stretch of tree-lined avenues and high-walled colonial bungalows where the VIPs live. But close enough to know that two cities share one name. One Delhi is generally messy. Rubbish piled into small mountains by the roadside. No footpaths to walk on. Narrow streets marked as one way, with every kind of traffic coming at you from every direction, and then simply stuck. And the dust. Not a film on the windowsill, but something you...South China Morning Post

SCI & TECHSep 20Why AI giants are choosing Singapore to turn models into real-world toolsWhen Jordan Seow joined OpenAI in June 2025, he became the company’s first locally hired forward-deployed engineer in Asia-Pacific, joining a Singapore office that then had fewer than 20 employees. The 29-year-old is now part of a fast-growing workforce built in Singapore by the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies. Experts say the city state is emerging as a regional hub – not for training the latest AI models, but for the increasingly crucial task of deploying and adapting them...South China Morning Post

SCI & TECHSep 19AI poses ‘zero' pc risk of world’s end by 2030: Nvidia’s Jensen HuangNew Delhi, Sep 19 (IANS) Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang has rejected predictions that artificial intelligence (AI) could cause the end of the world by 2030, saying there was “zero per cent” chance for such a crisis. Huang told CBS News that an AI-triggered catastrophe is senseless and raised doubts if some of the warnings were driven by political, commercial or attention-seeking considerations. He urged companies to quicken AI development while retaining responsibility for product safety, saying firms should not release systems that are not ready or safe. Such comments widened the divide among technology executives as many had recently argued to slow frontier development for safety measures to catch up. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and other industry figures had recently called for stronger safeguards around increasingly capable AI systems. Huang said the industry was expected to develop AI in a way that supported US prosperity without compromising product safety. He had voiced similar opinions at the Salesforce’s Dreamforce conference earlier this week, where he opposed new AI-specific laws and argued that safety was an engineering responsibility for individual companies. While the Nvidia chief was recently speaking at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles, a surprise call came from US President Donald Trump. Trump told the audience that “the robots will not be taking over” and called the broader controversy a “hoax”. The US administration had recently directed federal agencies to remove barriers to US leadership in AI, while the administration’s AI Action Plan called for faster innovation and fewer regulatory constraints. Microsoft Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Satya Nadella earlier this week said that the development of frontier artificial intelligence must be guided by the principle that it should help humanity and remain under human control, joining other tech leaders calling for a "deliberate" pace in the development of artificial intelligence (AI). Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei earlier in September warned that advances in AI could outpace efforts to understand and control the technology. —IANS aar/nathehawk_in · india
