SCI & TECHOct 7China’s thorium-229 nuclear clock beats Vienna’s on stability, studies showInitial results from the world’s first two working nuclear clocks indicate that China’s timepiece is about six times as stable as the one in Vienna, according to papers published this week by the journal Nature. The clocks were developed independently but both the Chinese team, led by Tsinghua University in Beijing, and the researchers at Vienna’s TU Wien used thorium-229 nuclei embedded in crystals to keep time by the steady rhythm of the atom’s core, rather than the electrons whirling around...South China Morning Post

SCI & TECHOct 7Red Sea brine pools reveal anaerobic microbial life powered by metal oxidationNear the bottom of the Red Sea, at a depth of nearly 1.8 kilometers, brine pools exist in conditions that seem inhospitable to most life forms. These hypersaline lakes, separated from the surrounding ocean by density and salt concentration, serve as a model for the early Earth, specifically the period before the Great Oxidation Event. A study led by Dr. Chakraborti and an international team of researchers found that microbial life thrives in these oxygen-poor, lightless environments by utilizing common metals as energy sources. The genetic analysis of these pools revealed a dense community of bacteria and archaea. Beneath the microbial mats on the pool floors, scientists detected anomalous concentrations of manganese, iron, molybdenum, and copper. In some locations, these metal levels were 100 times higher than those found on a typical seabed. The mechanism driving this ecosystem is chemical oxidation, a process defined by the transfer of electrons from one substance to another, rather than the aerobic oxidation familiar from combustion or rust. The researchers identified specific microbial groups, such as Nitrospira, capable of oxidizing manganese and iron to extract energy. Essentially, these organisms feed on the chemical transformation of metals, bypassing the need for sunlight or atmospheric oxygen.pravda_ru · russia

SCI & TECHOct 7"The beginning of a new scientific paradigm": Zuckerberg's Biohub, U.S. and Google build virtual cellMark Zuckerberg's Biohub is partnering with Google and the federal government in its ambitious effort to use AI for generating vast quantities of biological data that can predict how cells behave. Why it matters: The ultimate goal is an AI model that lets scientists test potential experiments virtually, helping them identify the most promising ones before spending the time and money to perform them in the lab.AI is capable of understanding proteins and other pieces of biology, but modeling an entire living cell is orders of magnitude more complex — and researchers don't yet have enough of the rAxios
