Unpacking Meta’s Massive Settlement with State Attorneys General Over Alleged Harms to Minors

Last month’s settlement between Meta Platforms and the attorneys general of 48 states entails both monetary payments and design changes to Facebook and Instagram. It also attempts to get competitors YouTube and TikTok to adopt some of the same changes, withholding payment to the states of about $5.3 billion until they do and until they each chip in about $5.3 billion of their own money. The settlement has been criticized on numerous grounds.
